This July, Gabe and I took his trusty Subaru across scenic highways to the scaling hills of northern Utah. Ahead of us was the city known for its Great Salt Lake, soda shops, and Post Malone.

Over the last five years, I have been regaled with stories of bellies filled with laughter, monumental childhood milestones, and memorable family moments. With every tale, my anticipation grew and ever since I’ve been eager to experience Salt Lake’s magic for myself.

The time finally came when we got the invite for his grandmother’s eightieth birthday and we were in for some of the most fun summer days yet!

The thing with a long-distance relationship, is that you not only travel to see each other, but you usually have to travel to see each other’s loved ones too. This, coupled with a global pandemic, made it less than conventional to meet one another’s kin in a timely manner. In other words – this was going to be my first time officially meeting (not just through a phone screen) his extended family.

Destination One – Bend, Oregon

This sweet little city of just over 100,000 is known for being home to the last Blockbuster on earth. Arriving at our Air BnB, we realized that Blockbuster closed in thirty minutes! With no time on our itinerary to wait until they opened the next day, we hauled ass and made way to the infamous terminus of movie rental chains.

In sum – it did not disappoint.

We dined on sushi and wrapped up our first travel day under a clear evening sky.

The following morning, we grabbed fuel at Lone Pine Coffee Roasters, where the ambience was quintessentially PNW and the food and bevs were finely crafted. 10/10!

Destination Two – Filer, Idaho

After our stop through Coeur D’Alene last year, I have a newfound fondness for the state of Idaho. The state famous for our favourite starchy tubers is chock with beautiful landscapes.

I am a big fan of maximalist décor and creativity in every inch of your space. To me, a home should be a place you feel inspired, safe, and can have fun! This stay was no exception.

Destination Three – Salt Lake City, Utah

Finally, we made it!

Our days in Salt Lake were filled to the brim with sunshine, exuding joy in nearly every moment. When we first arrived, Gabriel’s aunties (H & M) took us on a bike ride around the neighbourhood. To my surprise, we pedaled to the infamous location of the one and only High School Musical franchise – East High. You could say my inner 11 year-old self was pretty chuffed. To cap the day, we grabbed gelato and enjoyed the thunderstorm.

The following week passed in a warm haze.

A hike through the valley, many a good coffee, a backyard bbq, a paddle on the lake, a drone show, bowling with the family (me and G’s sister kicked ass, obvi), lots of dog cuddles, family bonding, SO much delicious food, and a special lady’s birthday party to cap it – the trip was the perfect adventure.

To put into words the joy this trip brought us could never suffice. It feels like my family has grown, as has my heart. When my days feel dreary, I reflect on these shimmering days and find a moment of joy again.
